About the Event
Background: Contemporary warfare is not so much about traditional methods of combat as it is about utilizing modern technologies for one’s own gain. Specifically Russia and China use disinformation tactics – such as fake news and troll accounts – in order to create confusion, suspicion and chaos, thus undermining the democratic fabric of open societies. This has become apparent during the pandemic as well as the US elections of 2016 and 2020 and the Brexit referendum.
The lecture: The lecture will focus on the nature and goals of the Russian and Chinese information warfare and their methods, how it affects the targeted states as well as how to deal with it.
The speaker: Patrik Oksanen is a journalist, writer and opinionmaker in security and defence. He was named Opinion writer of the year 2017 by Dagens Opinion and Journalist of the year in 2018 by Dagens Media. His book Skarpa Skärvor shows how information warfare is a threat to the open society.
