About the Event
Background: The Taliban ruled in Afghanistan between 1996-2001. The country had suffered from years of civil war and in 2001 the Taliban rule was overthrown from power. The regime shift, which was orchestrated by the US, came as a direct result of the 9/11 attacks in the United States earlier the same year.
For 20 years the US- and NATO-led coalitions fought against the Taliban. During that time Afghanistan has received massive financial support and humanitarian aid in an attempt to build and develop a new independent country with a functioning democracy. The aim was a modern state of rule with a functioning school system, healthcare, free press, freedom of speech, as well as an inclusive environment for the country’s women. This project however, all came to an end at 15th of August when the Taliban reclaimed power, almost entirely without resistance, in a pace which surprised the world, not to mention the Taliban themselves.
